For many survivors of domestic and sexual violence, access to health care is a vital part of healing and self-determination. The Tribe Circle is working with advocates and health providers to get survivors across the country the access to the care and coverage they deserve. Learn more about your options Because being a survivor of domestic violence is considered a Qualifying Life Event, survivors can enroll at any time throughout the year. Insurance companies are prohibited from denying coverage to victims of domestic violence as a preexisting condition. Survivors of do not need to wait for Open Enrollment. They qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) because they are survivors of domestic violence. If survivors of domestic violence are not able to enroll in health care, they are eligible for a “hardship exemption” from paying the fee, because domestic violence is considered a qualifying life event. Tragedy and hardship can strike any victim at any moment. And when they do, high, unplanned, out-of-pocket expenses can lead a victim down a destabilizing and difficult financial path, forcing them to seek high-interest loans, or even stay in an abusive situation. The Tribe Circle offers eligible domestic violence victims confidential, low-interest loans or small grants to help them bridge their financial gaps in times of emergency. A safety plan is a set of actions that can help lower your risk of being hurt by your partner. It includes information specific to you and your life that will increase your safety at school, home, and other places that you go on a daily basis.
